Increments of waste due to the industrial and domestic activities had raised the need for a more efficient and systematic waste management. Factors like costs, ineffective enforcement and lack of environmental awareness had resulted companies taking easy way out to manage their waste. ISO 14001 is one of the initiatives for organization in running their business, while preserving the environment. Main objective of this research is to study the positive and negative impacts upon implementation of ISO 14001 on waste management in selected electronic factory, which is NEC Semiconductors (M) Sdn Bhd., which is located in Telok Panglima Garang, Selangor. Three methods were applied in this research; questionnaire for operators, management interview and field observation. This research found that the ISO 14001 is obviously has brought many positives changes on waste management aspects such as more orderly storage, inventory and labeling, good controlled of waste disposal and a reduction in waste generation. Furthermore, the organization also gained benefit in terms of company reputation and increasing staff awareness on the environment and its management. This study reports the environmental performance of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), who are already certified to the ISO 14001 standard in the United Kingdom. A survey questionnaire was used and 59 SMEs responded to this study. The results show that SMEs has gained various benefits from the implementation of the standard. The ISO 14001 implementation has increased awareness among SMEs staff, improved procedure and documentation, improved management structures and upheld their image. SMEs also recorded financial savings in areas like waste recycling/reuse, energy and water consumption and legal compliance. Even though, the saving are far less than larger organizations has obtained, its shows that this standard could give more to SMEs in the longer period. Through a good environmental image and having EMS in place, SMEs have a competitive edge in the market where supply chain pressure is increasing. However, they still faced problems in terms of costs and time during the implementation processes and in maintaining the standard. These problems can be solved if they have support from the authorities, business clubs and environmental NGOs. Publicity and promotion of the benefits of ISO 14001 implementation in SMEs could encourage other SMEs to follow suit. Further incentives by the government like tax reduction and financial grants to SMEs who are certified should be considered. As financial problems still remain an obstacle for SMEs in adopting EMS, financial grants, like SCEEMAS can be useful. |

The increase in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is associated with the growth of the countrys economy and that basic needs such as health and education would develop as a by-product of growth in GDP. However, development experts acknowledge that high levels of per capita GDP and industrialization are neither necessary nor sufficient for meeting basic needs. Attempts have been made to device indices that reflect the extent to which basic needs are satisfied. One of the best known of these indicators is the Physical Quality of Life Index (PQLI). This study attempts to measure the PQLI between the states in Malaysia. Results show that the more developed states with high GDP also experienced high PQLI but nevertheless although, some states experienced high GDP, the PQLI are low and vice versa. |

The study was carried out to analyze employees and students perception towards Occupational Safety and Health aspects (OSH) at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSK), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Selangor, Malaysia. Based on questionnaire technique, information was gathered from respondents about their knowledge, opinion, understanding, acceptance and awareness towards OSH aspects. By using purposive sampling technique, 250 respondents were chosen from the faculty staffs and students. Data was analysed by using simple statistical methods such as percentage and average. Analysed data was presented in the form of tables and graphs. The results showed that the mean students perception towards OSH was at the statisfactory level (3.75) as compared to the medium mean staffs perception (3.3). The result obviously showed that the level of awareness among the faculty staffs about the occupational safety and health is at the moderate scale. Training and policy factors are the two dominant factors that influence the level of awareness among the FSSH staffs on the occupational safety and health aspects. Out of 49 respondents attended the training program, 89.8% of them showed a high level of awareness towards OSH aspects. |

One of the important soft skills that have always been stressed by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education for the university students to acquire during their universitys life is entrepreneurship skill. This soft skill should be an added value to students academic qualification once they leave university to face the real world. However, there are many factors that can be obstacles to students to acquire this soft skill such as shyness, social environment, academic stress, etc. It is therefore, this study attempts to examine to what extent factors such as shyness, social, artistic and self-esteem have influence on students involvement in entrepreneurship. There were 2,284 1st year students of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) have been chosen as respondents and each of them was provided with a set of questionnaire consisting of seven domains to be answered. SPSS program was used to process the data and then by the path model was employed to analyze the data. The path coefficients were computed by using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results showed that the most influential factor on students entrepreneurial activities was social behavior with the path coefficient of 0.35. Even though, shyness has a small negative path coefficient, i.e., -0.08, it agreed with the assumption that by reducing this students personality trait, it will increases the involvement of them in entrepreneurial activities. Based on the residuals (e) of the regressions and other statistical tests, it is confirmed that other unexplained variables should be considered in an attempt to find the most influential factors on students involvement in entrepreneurial activities. |

Co-curricular or extra-curricular activities are an integral
part of knowledge in supporting students
generic skills development in order to become quality human capital. In general,
the co-curricular activities in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Malaysia
are of similar fields. However, the institutions have their own way to assess
and evaluate the students involvements
in these activities. In relation to this, as of 2010/2011 academic session,
the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) has implemented a more flexible approach
whereby student are given more freedom at choosing, creating and carrying out
the activities based on a learning contract which are drawn out and agreed upon
by the students and supervisors prior to the implementation of the said activities.
A survey was conducted in order to determine the level of knowledge and understanding
among students in relation to the learning contract and their readiness to use
the learning contract in their next co-curricular activities. A set of questionnaire
was developed and used as a research tool for that purposes. A total of 51 respondents
were selected from Training for Trainers (TOT) workshop to participate in this
survey. The study found that the level of understanding (mean = 4.06-4.16) and
acceptance (mean = 4.02-4.46) on co-curricular activities learning contract
among students are excellent. It was also reported that 86% of the students
have clear knowledge about the learning contract and its implementation for
co-curricular activities. The majority of students stated that they had achieved
all the learning contract principles (mean = 3.92-4.25) and learning outcomes
(mean = 4.00-4.18) required. In general, this research showed positive results
on the implementation of learning contract in co-curricular activities in the
UKM. The new approach to implementing and assessing co-curricular activities
has already been accepted by most UKM students. Nevertheless, in order to achieve
the optimum results, continuous steps should be taken by the respective parties
to ensure that the students are well informed about the status of the learning
contract. |
