  In present study, status of Oxytetracycline (OTC) residues in chicken meat was determined in Rawalpindi/Islamabad area of Pakistan. Preliminary screening of samples for the presence of antibiotic residues was performed by a microbiological assay using Bacillus subtilis as test organism. OTC in positive samples was detected and quantified using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) following extraction of the analytes with McIlvaine buffer and Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) system. A linear calibration curve was obtained with correlation coefficient of 0.9981 while average recoveries were greater than 91% with RSD values between 1.64 to 2.07%, while the Limit of Detection (LOD) was 0.01 μg mL-1. Out of 29 meat samples that were analyzed for OTC residues, 13 (44.8%) had detectable residue levels for OTC and 6 (20.7%) had higher residue levels than the recommended maximum residue level (0.2, 0.6 and 1.2 μg g-1) for muscles, liver and kidney, respectively. The method described in this study would be useful for routine monitoring of OTC residues in chicken meat.

  Genetic mechanism of yield and its components was investigated in a complete diallel cross involving five wheat varieties/lines viz; HABA-4, HABA-12, Pitic-62, Pak-81 and LU26S. Plant height and peduncle length were conditioned by partial dominance with additive type of gene action while economic yield per plant, biological yield per plant and harvest index were controlled by over dominance type of gene action. Non allelic interaction was absent for all these traits.

  A study was conducted for quality seed production for cotton wheat and barley by organizing effective and viable farmer's association. Purity of the seed produced by these groups was 1 percent higher than certified and 2.10 percent higher than basic seed standards fixed by Federal Seed Certification Department. Farmer's of these associations were able to increase their income by 41 percent through increased the yield about 0.21 t ha–1 or 16 percent in case of cotton and 0.85 t ha–1, (7 to 24%) in case of wheat and barley.

  Smoking index measures the present burden of smoking in terms of cigarette-years or pack-years smoked. The present article is about estimation of smoking index for male smokers in Multan city. We used Indrayan’s smoking index that accounts for different characteristics like cigarettes smoked per day, duration of smoking, passive smoking, smoking of filter cigarettes, age at start and duration elapsed since quitting by ex-smokers etc. It is estimated that the average smoking index is 10.48±0.34 while the 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles are 5.81, 9.51 and 13.66, respectively. Furthermore, the Weibull distribution is found to be the best fitted empirical distribution for the obtained dataset of smoking index with estimates of shape parameter and scale parameter as 1.6407 and 11.7049, respectively.

  The effects of various NPK levels on growth, flowering, and xanthophyll contents of African marigold (Tagetes erecta, ‘Double Eagle’) and French marigold (Tagetes patula, ‘Yellow’) were investigated. Plant height, number of branches plant-1, leaf area (cm2), total chlorophyll contents (mg g-1), number of flowers plant-1, flower diameter, flower quality, fresh and dry weight of a flower, total flower weight plant-1, blooming period, and days to flowering were maximum with 15:10:10 g m-2 NPK application. However, leaf nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium contents reached the highest values with 15:20:10, 5:20:10, and 10:20:10 g m-2 NPK application, respectively. Xanthophyll contents were higher in plants fertilized with 15:20:10 g m-2 NPK application. Results suggested that NPK fertilization enhanced growth and improved yield, quality, and xanthophyll contents of marigold.
